KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

THILO LANG

Thilo Lang is Head of Department at the Leibniz Institute for Regional Geography (IfL), Leipzig/ Germany, and lecturer at the Global and European Studies Institute at the University of Leipzig. He is a member of the Collaborative Research Centre 1199 “Processes of Spatialisation under the Global Condition” and directs the research group “Multiple Geographies of Regional and Local Development” at IfL. His research interests include polarisation processes at multiple levels, innovation outside of agglomerations, local and regional change with a focus on ‘peripheral’ regions. Previously he held positions at the Leibniz Institute for Research on Society and Space and the Regional Development Agency ZukunftsAgentur Brandenburg GmbH as well as fellowships at the University of Sheffield, Durham University (UK) and a guest professorship at the Latvian University in Riga.

NICK GALLENT

Professor of Housing and Planning, The Bartlett School of Planning, Faculty of the Built Environment

Nick Gallent is professor of Housing and Planning at University College London (UCL), where he’s worked since 1999.  His research is mainly focused on housing and the planning system, but often links across to community engagement with planning, and regularly looks at rural communities and places.  He has published a number of books on these topics, the most recent being the Routledge Companion to Rural Planning, edited with Mark Scott and Menelaos Gkartzios in 2019, and Whose Housing Crisis, published by Policy Press in 2019.  Nick was head of the Bartlett School of Planning at UCL between 2011 and 2019 and is a fellow of the UK’s professional planning and surveying institutes, as well as a fellow of the UK Academy of Social Sciences.
